TENS is a great natural pain relief option for your labour and birth toolkit.
We’re pleased to announce that we are now offering TENS machine hire for women in labour, providing an additional option for pain management during childbirth.
What is a TENS machine?
TENS machine, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a drug-free form of pain relief often utilised by women in labour to cope with the intensity of surges/contractions. TENS works by passing mild and safe electrical impulses through the skin, via electrode pads, into the nerve fibres which lie below. This gives you a gentle buzzing sensation, which can be increased or boosted as required. These electrical impulses prevent pain signals from reaching your brain and stimulate you body to release natural pain killing chemicals, such as endorphins.
Do not use a TENS machine under the following circumstances, without talking to a midwife or doctor first:
Before you reach 37 weeks of pregnancy.
When you’re in a bath, shower, or birth pool.
If you have broken skin or a healing scar where you want to place the pads.
If you have a cardiac pacemaker or a heart rhythm problem.
If you have pain that you don’t believe is labour pain. See your doctor or midwife if this is the case.
